COLD THERAPY FOR HORSES

Applying cold therapy to a tissue injury, helps limit the inflammation by causing the blood vessels to constrict. This in turn helps to limits the blood flow to the injured site, which helps to moderate the release of the vasoactive substances and therefore helps minimizes the pain and swelling in the injured area.

Using Cold Therapy To Help Relieve Pain

Applying cold therapy on an acute injury can help to ease pain. The cold therapy slows the conduction rate of sensory receptors, and therefore fewer numbers of pain messages are received and processed by the brain, so in turn helps to ease the pain.

Cold Therapy To Help Control Swelling

A tissue injury causes an immediate chemical reaction at the cellular level. This reaction releases prostaglandins and histamines in the injured area. When this happens the damaged capillaries release cellular waste (water, dissolved electrolytes and proteins) into the surrounding tissue. The body sends scavenger cells into the area which has been affected to remove the damaged tissue or to help kill the bacteria that may be present at that time.. This process starts the build up of large amounts of fluid know as an “edema,” or swelling.

GEL-EZE UNDER BANDAGE GEL PAD

This new lightweight Gel-Eze under bandage gel pad is the innovative new pad that can be chilled to provide therapeutic relief to a horses leg. Coated with a perforated and fully breathable material, Gel-Eze is ideal for travelling or working horses.

Can be used as:

1) A regular pad/cold pad under most types of bandages, i.e. work, travelling or in the stable.
2) Chilled in the freezer the pad becomes an efficient cold compress and is ideal for the notoriously difficult places to bandage. Cold effect last 30/40 minutes (depending on climatic conditions).

Perforations allow the horse’s skin to breathe and greatly reduce the weight.
